Winn Group Supports Walker Bowling Club

Winn Group has renewed its sponsorship of Walker Bowling Club to ensure the future of the community-based organisation.

Having historically sponsored the club, based in Walker Park, Winns has once again provided an annual donation to help with the upkeep of greens and the hire of equipment needed to maintain them during the summer months.

With other bowling clubs closing across the region, Walker’s has in fact taken on new members and is working with the YMCA next door to encourage a younger generation of bowlers.

“The club is open to anyone who wants to come in from the local area and we’d welcome younger members at any time,” said Jim Devine, club secretary.

“We’d be very happy to get younger members because the club tends to lean towards middle aged and older.

“We combine with the YMCA to give them use of the green for their people and try to work with anybody in the area to get them involved.”

The bowls club, which has been going since the 1930s, will put the money to good use to help with the ongoing maintenance costs associated.

“The number of members we did have, we were struggling with the upkeep of the greens,” said Alec Tait, Treasurer at a club which relies on sponsorship and members’ subs.

“It keeps us going. We couldn’t do it without the money from Winns.”

Winns CSR Lead Ross Jackson was delighted to confirm this financial support for a club that is on the company’s doorstep.

“Walker Bowling Club has been around for decades and offers the chance to be part of a community club for the people in the local area,” he said.“Thanks to Winns’ contribution, they can continue to provide great facilities for the people of Walker.”
