St Lawrence’s Primary School children are enjoying free, healthy starts to the day after Winn Group funded a Greggs Foundation breakfast club.

Covering the next two years, the club is designed to deliver the best possible beginning to each school day for children living in deprivation.

With a settled environment and the chance to do homework too, the breakfast club is vital to Byker Wall-based St Lawrence’s, who are incredibly grateful to Winns for the funding support.

Head of School, Charlotte Murray, said: “It makes such a difference to our children, getting them in first thing in the morning. Getting them a nutritious breakfast that they need to have makes such a difference.

“It has a huge impact on our children when they’re coming into school. They’re very settled, it helps improve attendance, and when attendance improves progress improves. It makes a huge difference to all of our children in a really substantial way.

“We appreciate it so much. Our school wouldn’t be as successful as it is without our breakfast club. With budgets ever-tightening, it’s something we’d struggle to be able to fund ourselves, so it is really vital.”

Lynne Hindmarch, Breakfast Club manager at the Greggs Foundation, said: “We are delighted to partner with Winn Group to enable children at St Lawrence Primary to access a free breakfast each school day.

“Greggs Foundation currently supports over 740 schools nationally reaching around 48,000 children each school day.

“We could not do this without the kind and generous support of our business partners who fund the food items at school. With Greggs giving any amount of free bread from their local store, this is a true collaboration of like-minded businesses.”
